Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being used in various fields, including creative industries. But will it kill creativity?
This is a topic we have been discussing extensively within our team over the past few months: the role of AI in the creative process, for example in designing a website layout, and how it can impact human creativity.
We see artificial intelligence as a powerful tool that can enhance the creative process by providing valuable insights and suggestions. Our team already uses it daily to support a variety of tasks; however, it still seems far from being capable of creating something truly original and unique.
Human creativity results from a complex combination of influences and factors, including emotions, experiences, and cultural and social contexts. AI may already be able to simulate some of these influences, but it is still far from fully replicating the complexity of the human creative process, especially when this process is considered in a more subjective realm that is (still) incomparable to any existing algorithm.
It seems that this is related to the fact that AI systems are based on the past; that is, they analyze data to identify patterns. Even though these systems have learning capabilities, there is always a strong reliance on past information for each output generated. This results in more “rigid” outcomes and a much less frequent disruptive process.
In conclusion, we believe AI should be seen as a complementary tool to human creativity, not a replacement. It is very important to understand its limitations and the need to use it consciously. AI has already proven to be impressive in its capabilities and may one day achieve true creativity, but clearly, we are not there yet.
